How sequential discounts are calculated

Each discount applies to the price left after the previous markdown.

  1. Apply first discount

What is a triple discount?

A triple discount applies three consecutive percentage markdowns to an original price. Each discount reduces the current price, not the starting sticker price. Retailers often stack promotions this way during clearance events.

Sequential discount formula

Pf=P0×(1d1100)×(1d2100)×(1d3100)P_f = P_0 \times \left(1 - \frac{d_1}{100}\right) \times \left(1 - \frac{d_2}{100}\right) \times \left(1 - \frac{d_3}{100}\right)

Where P0P_0 is the original price, d1d_1, d2d_2, and d3d_3 are the three discount rates, and PfP_f is the final price. Total savings equals P0PfP_0 - P_f.

Worked example

Start with a $100 item and apply 20%, then 10%, then 5% off in order. After 20% the price is $80. After 10% it is $72. After 5% the final price is $68.40. Total savings are $31.60, which is an effective 31.6% discount from the original $100.

Why stacked discounts differ from adding percentages

Three discounts of 20%, 10%, and 5% do not equal 35% off the original price. Because each markdown applies to a smaller base, the effective discount is 31.6%, not 35%. Always multiply the remaining price factors rather than summing the rates.

Frequently asked questions

Does discount order matter?
For pure percentage discounts, order does not change the final price because multiplication is commutative. The calculator applies discounts in the order you enter them.
How is effective discount calculated?
Effective discount equals total savings divided by the original price, expressed as a percentage. It shows the true markdown from the starting price.
Can I use this for two discounts only?
Yes. Set any unused discount field to 0% and the calculator will skip that step.
