P is tag price, d is percent off, n/d is the fractional discount, N is items you get, and M is items you pay for at full tag price each.

Worked example

Tag price is $49.99. Twenty percent off yields $39.99 per item. One-third off yields $33.33. A two-for-one deal at $69.99 each means you pay $69.99 for two items, or $34.99 each. The fraction discount wins in this comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Which discount type is usually best?
It depends on the numbers. A deep fraction off can beat a modest percent discount, and multi-item deals only win when the bundle price is low relative to tag price. Always compare final price per item.
How do I enter a buy-one-get-one-free deal?
Use the multi-item section with items you get set to 2 and items you pay for set to 1. The calculator divides total paid by items received.
Does this include sales tax?
No. Results show pre-tax sale prices. Add tax with the sales tax calculator if you need the out-the-door total.
Can I compare different tag prices?
