How Texas overtime pay is calculated under FLSA rules
Texas follows federal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) overtime rules. Non-exempt employees must receive at least time and a half for hours worked over 40 in a single workweek. Texas does not add daily overtime requirements like California, so weekly hours above 40 drive the overtime premium. This calculator estimates regular pay, overtime pay, and total gross earnings for weekly or biweekly pay periods.
Start with your base hourly rate from our hourly wage calculator, then apply the FLSA multiplier. For a general overtime estimator with sample weekly paycheck totals, use the overtime pay calculator. To see how overtime affects net pay after federal withholding, pair gross results with the Texas paycheck calculator or the take-home paycheck calculator.
Texas overtime pay formulas
Overtime is calculated per workweek, not per pay period. Each week is evaluated independently, even when you are paid biweekly:
Regular hours cap at 40 per week. Any hours above 40 in that week count as overtime. For biweekly pay, enter hours for each week separately so overtime is calculated correctly when one week exceeds 40 hours and the other does not.
Texas vs. daily overtime states
Texas has no state law requiring overtime after 8 hours in a day. California and a few other states do. If you work in a state with daily overtime, use the California overtime calculator or the Florida overtime calculator for FLSA weekly rules in other states.
Worked example: $15/hour, 45 hours in one week, 1.5x multiplier
Consider a Texas hourly worker earning $15.00 per hour who works 45 hours in a single week with the standard 1.5x overtime multiplier:
- Regular hours: 40 hours at $15.00 = $600.00
- Overtime hours: 45 - 40 = 5 hours
- Overtime rate: $15.00 x 1.5 = $22.50 per hour
- Overtime pay: 5 x $22.50 = $112.50
- Total weekly gross pay: $600.00 + $112.50 = $712.50
Texas has no state income tax, so this $712.50 is fully subject to federal withholding and FICA when processed through payroll. Annualize weekly overtime with the salary calculator or estimate net pay with the Texas paycheck calculator.
