Compound raise formula

Each year your salary grows by the raise percentage applied to the prior year balance. After n years with annual raise rate r:

Future Salary=S0×(1+r)n\mathrm{Future\ Salary} = S_0 \times (1 + r)^{n}

Where S₀ is your current salary, r is the annual raise as a decimal (3.5% = 0.035), and n is the number of years.

Inflation-adjusted real salary

Nominal salary tells you the dollar amount on paper. Real salary tells you what that amount is worth in today's purchasing power after inflation:

Real Salary=S0×(1+r)n(1+i)n\mathrm{Real\ Salary} = \frac{S_0 \times (1 + r)^{n}}{(1 + i)^{n}}

Where i is the annual inflation rate as a decimal. If your raise rate equals inflation, real salary stays flat. If raises outpace inflation, your purchasing power grows.

Total increase and percent increase follow from the nominal projection:

Worked example: $60,000 salary, 3.5% raises, 5 years, 2.5% inflation

A professional earning $60,000 today expects 3.5% annual raises for 5 years. Inflation averages 2.5% per year:

  1. Future nominal salary: $60,000 x (1.035)⁵ = $71,261.18.
  2. Inflation-adjusted salary: $71,261.18 / (1.025)⁵ = $62,984.50 in today's dollars.
  3. Total increase: $11,261.18 (18.8% above starting salary).
  4. Real purchasing power gain: $2,984.50 above the original $60,000 after adjusting for inflation.
