How to estimate state income tax in 2026

State income tax rules vary widely across the United States. Some states charge no income tax at all, others use a flat rate, and many apply progressive brackets with their own deductions and exemptions. This calculator estimates annual state income tax, after-tax income, and effective and marginal rates for all 50 states using 2026 tax parameters.

State tax is only one piece of your total tax picture. Pair this estimate with the income tax calculator for federal liability, the FICA tax calculator for payroll taxes, and a state-specific tool like the Texas paycheck calculator or California paycheck calculator for full paycheck withholding. The take-home paycheck calculator combines federal, FICA, and state withholding in one view.

How state income tax is calculated

Most states start with annual gross income, subtract any state standard deduction and personal exemption, then apply either a flat rate or progressive brackets:

State Taxable=max ⁣(0, Annual IncomeState DeductionsExemptions)\text{State Taxable} = \max\!\left(0,\ \text{Annual Income} - \text{State Deductions} - \text{Exemptions}\right)
State Tax=i(Income in Bracketi×Ratei)orState Taxable×Flat Rate\text{State Tax} = \sum_{i} (\text{Income in Bracket}_i \times \text{Rate}_i) \quad \text{or} \quad \text{State Taxable} \times \text{Flat Rate}

Nine states have no personal income tax on wages: Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming. Flat-tax states like Arizona (2.5%), Colorado (4.4%), and Utah (4.45%) apply a single rate to taxable income. Progressive states like California and Vermont use multiple brackets with rising rates.

What this calculator does not include

This tool estimates state income tax on annual wages only. It does not model federal tax, FICA withholding, local city taxes, property taxes, sales taxes, or credits like the earned income tax credit. For a complete paycheck breakdown, use a state paycheck calculator or the salary calculator.

Worked example: California, $75,000 income, single

Consider a single California resident with $75,000 in annual wage income and no state deductions modeled beyond the bracket structure:

  1. Annual income: $75,000
  2. California taxable income: $75,000 (California applies brackets to full wage income in this simplified model)
  3. Progressive bracket calculation: Tax accumulates across nine brackets from 1% on the lowest band up to 9.3% on income above $70,606
  4. California state tax: $3,517.36
  5. After-tax income: $71,482.64. Effective state rate: about 4.7%

The same $75,000 salary in no-income-tax Texas would owe $0 in state income tax. In flat-tax Utah at 4.45%, state tax would be $3,337.50. Use the tax bracket calculator to see how federal brackets interact with your gross income.

Frequently asked questions

Which states have no income tax?
Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming do not levy a personal income tax on wages in this calculator.
What tax year does this calculator use?
State tax brackets, flat rates, deductions, and exemptions reflect the 2026 tax year.
Does this include federal income tax?
No. This tool estimates state income tax only. Use the income tax calculator and a state paycheck calculator for federal and FICA withholding.
Why is my actual state tax different from this estimate?
Real returns may include itemized deductions, tax credits, other income sources, or local taxes not modeled here. Some states also tax retirement income differently from wages.
How do flat-tax and progressive states differ?
Flat-tax states apply one rate to taxable income regardless of earnings level. Progressive states charge higher rates as income rises, which increases the marginal rate on additional dollars earned.
Are the results stored on a server?
No. All math runs in your browser. Changing inputs updates the page URL so you can share your scenario.
