Pro rata salary for part-time and reduced hours

A pro rata salary is your proportionate share of a full-time annual salary based on the hours you actually work. Employers use it for part-time roles, job shares, parental leave returns, and phased retirement. Knowing your pro rata pay helps you compare offers and budget accurately.

Enter the full-time salary, standard weekly hours, your weekly hours, and weeks per year. The calculator returns annual, monthly, weekly, and hourly pro rata amounts plus your time fraction. For partial calendar periods such as mid-month starts, use the prorated salary calculator. For gross pay before deductions, see the gross pay calculator. To estimate monthly take-home from annual CTC after bonus and deductions, use the salary calculator. To compare headcount equivalents, use the full-time equivalent calculator.

Worked example

A full-time role pays $35,000 for 40 hours per week. Working 25 hours gives a time fraction of 62.5%. Pro rata salary = $35,000 x 25/40 = $21,875. Monthly pay is $1,822.92, weekly pay is $420.67, and the implied hourly rate is $16.83 over 52 weeks.

Frequently asked questions

Is pro rata salary the same as take-home pay?
No. Pro rata salary is gross pay scaled by hours worked. Taxes, benefits, and other deductions still apply. Use a paycheck or tax calculator for net pay.
Do benefits scale pro rata too?
It depends on employer policy. Some benefits (pension match, paid leave) may be pro-rated while others (health insurance) may be full coverage regardless of hours. Check your contract.
What if I work different hours each week?
This calculator assumes a steady weekly schedule. For variable hours, use average weekly hours over a representative period or calculate each pay period separately.
How many weeks per year should I use?
52 is standard for annual salaried roles. Use 50 or fewer if your contract excludes paid holiday weeks from the hourly denominator.
Can pro rata salary exceed the full-time amount?
Only if you work more than the defined full-time hours. Overtime and premium rates are usually calculated separately from the base pro rata formula.
