Understanding Price Elasticity of Supply (PES)
Price elasticity of supply measures how responsive quantity supplied is to a change in market price. It helps producers, commodity traders, and policy analysts estimate how much output will expand or contract after a price move.
A PES of 1.43 means that a 1% price increase is associated with roughly a 1.43% increase in quantity supplied. Formulas and calculation methods
Price elasticity of supply uses the same mathematical structure as demand elasticity, but with quantity supplied in the numerator. Supply elasticity is typically positive because price and quantity supplied usually move in the same direction.

Worked example
Suppose a market moves from price $10 and quantity supplied 100 units to price $15 and quantity supplied 180 units.
- Midpoint %ΔQ = (180 - 100) / 140 = 57.14%
- Midpoint %ΔP = (15 - 10) / 12.5 = 40.00%
- PES = 57.14% / 40.00% = 1.43 (elastic supply)
Because PES is greater than 1, producers expanded output more than proportionally to the price increase. This pattern is common when capacity can be added quickly and input costs do not rise at the same pace as price.
Interpreting elasticity values
- Es > 1: Elastic supply. Quantity supplied responds more than proportionally to price.
- Es = 1: Unit elastic supply. Quantity and price change in equal proportion.
- 0 < Es < 1: Inelastic supply. Quantity responds less than proportionally to price.
- Es = 0: Perfectly inelastic supply. Quantity supplied is fixed regardless of price.
