How this GST is calculated

Three steps to compute tax and final gross payable total.

  1. Identify base net price and GST rate

Initial pre-tax net amount is $100.00 with a Goods and Services Tax rate of 10%.

  2. Calculate the GST tax amount

    GST=Net×r100=100.00×10100=$10.00\mathrm{GST} = \mathrm{Net} \times \frac{r}{100} = 100.00 \times \frac{10}{100} = \$10.00

Multiply the net base by 10% (0.1000) to calculate the added tax.

  3. Compute final gross price

    Gross=Net+GST=100.00+10.00=$110.00\mathrm{Gross} = \mathrm{Net} + \mathrm{GST} = 100.00 + 10.00 = \$110.00

Add $10.00 GST to the $100.00 net price for a total bill of $110.00.

Standard GST benchmarks reflect active tax authority regulations for the 2025/2026 period. Singapore GST is 9% (effective January 1, 2024). Canada applies 5% federal GST (provincial sales taxes like PST or harmonized HST may also apply). Australia (10%) and New Zealand (15%) apply uniform nationwide rates. India utilizes multi-tier slabs (5%, 12%, 18%, 28%) divided equally between Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST) on intra-state supplies.

How Goods and Services Tax (GST) works

Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a multi-stage, destination-based consumption tax levied on the sale of goods and services. Whether you are invoicing clients, preparing retail receipts, or managing cross-border transactions, determining the correct tax component is essential for tax compliance and cash-flow management. All calculations run directly in your browser without transmitting sensitive financial data to an external server.

This calculator supports both forward calculations (adding GST to a net base price) and reverse calculations (extracting the tax embedded in a gross price). If you offer retail markdowns before tax is assessed, you can first verify net sale prices using our discount calculator. If you are pricing goods or invoicing clients in Quebec, calculate the combined provincial and federal taxes using our GST QST calculator. For business owners balancing payroll deductions against sales tax obligations, our gross pay calculator helps project direct wage costs, while self-employed contractors can evaluate their federal obligations with the 1099 tax calculator.

GST mathematical formulas

Depending on whether a price quote is tax-exclusive or tax-inclusive, you will apply either the forward addition formula or the reverse extraction formula.

1. Adding GST to a net price (tax-exclusive)

When you know the base price of a product or service and need to add GST, multiply the net amount by the decimal tax rate:

GST Amount=Net Amount×(r100)\mathrm{GST\ Amount} = \mathrm{Net\ Amount} \times \left(\frac{r}{100}\right)
Gross Amount=Net Amount+GST Amount=Net Amount×(1+r100)\mathrm{Gross\ Amount} = \mathrm{Net\ Amount} + \mathrm{GST\ Amount} = \mathrm{Net\ Amount} \times \left(1 + \frac{r}{100}\right)

Here, rr denotes the statutory percentage tax rate. For example, on a $500 invoice subject to Australia's 10% GST, the tax is 500×0.10=$50500 \times 0.10 = \$50, resulting in a gross invoice of $550.

2. Extracting GST from a gross price (tax-inclusive)

In many consumer retail environments, displayed shelf prices already include GST. Because the tax was applied to the net base rather than the final total, you cannot simply multiply the gross total by the tax rate. Doing so would overstate the tax liability. Instead, divide by one plus the tax rate:

Net Amount=Gross Amount1+r100\mathrm{Net\ Amount} = \frac{\mathrm{Gross\ Amount}}{1 + \frac{r}{100}}
GST Amount=Gross AmountNet Amount=Gross Amount×(r100+r)\mathrm{GST\ Amount} = \mathrm{Gross\ Amount} - \mathrm{Net\ Amount} = \mathrm{Gross\ Amount} \times \left(\frac{r}{100 + r}\right)

This relationship yields standard statutory shortcuts:

  • 10% GST (Australia): Dividing by 1+0.101 + 0.10 simplifies to extracting GST by dividing the gross price by 11 (10/110=1/1110 / 110 = 1 / 11).
  • 15% GST (New Zealand): Multiplying by 15/11515 / 115 simplifies to multiplying the gross total by the fraction 3/23.
  • 9% GST (Singapore): The tax extraction fraction is 9/1099 / 109.

International GST rate benchmarks (2025/2026)

Different jurisdictions implement GST with varying standard rates, zero-rated exemptions, and sub-national mechanisms. The table below outlines standard GST schedules across major international systems:

Country / JurisdictionStandard RateTax Structure & Notes
Australia10%Administered by the ATO. Basic food, healthcare, and education are GST-free.
Canada5%Federal GST administered by the CRA. Participating provinces combine this with provincial sales taxes into a single Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) ranging from 13% to 15%.
New Zealand15%Administered by Inland Revenue (IRD). Broad-based tax with very few zero-rated exemptions.
Singapore9%Administered by IRAS. Rate increased to 9% effective January 1, 2024.
India5%, 12%, 18%, 28%Four-tier slab system administered by the CBIC. Intra-state sales are split 50/50 into Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST). Inter-state sales incur Integrated GST (IGST).

Step-by-step worked examples

Worked example 1: Calculating invoice GST in Australia (10%)

A supplier provides consulting services billed at a pre-tax base rate of $1,200. With Australia's 10% GST:

  1. Multiply the net base by 10%: 1200×0.10=$120.001200 \times 0.10 = \$120.00.
  2. Add tax to the net price: 1200+120=$1,320.001200 + 120 = \$1,320.00.
  3. The tax invoice displays a net fee of $1,200, GST of $120, and a total payable of $1,320.

Worked example 2: Extracting GST from a tax-inclusive retail receipt in New Zealand (15%)

A retail customer buys electronic goods for an all-inclusive receipt total of $230 in Auckland, New Zealand:

  1. Divide total by 1.15: 230/1.15=$200.00230 / 1.15 = \$200.00 net amount.
  2. Extract the embedded GST: 230200=$30.00230 - 200 = \$30.00 (or 230×(3/23)=$30.00230 \times (3 / 23) = \$30.00).
  3. The merchant remits $30 in GST and retains $200 in net revenue.

Worked example 3: India intra-state supply (18% GST)

A software company in Karnataka sells a software license to a local business for $1,000 net:

  1. Calculate total GST at 18%: 1000×0.18=$180.001000 \times 0.18 = \$180.00.
  2. Split the tax evenly between Central and State authorities: CGST (9%) is $90.00 and SGST (9%) is $90.00.
  3. The final bill total is 1000+180=$1,180.001000 + 180 = \$1,180.00.

Frequently asked questions

What is the fundamental difference between inclusive and exclusive GST?
Exclusive GST means the stated price does not include tax; GST must be added on top to reach the final bill. Inclusive GST means the price already contains the tax component, requiring reverse division to isolate the pre-tax net.
Why cannot I extract GST by multiplying the gross amount by the tax percentage?
GST is assessed as a percentage of the pre-tax net, not the final total. Multiplying a $110 inclusive price by 10% yields $11, which is incorrect because the original net was $100 and the actual tax was $10. Dividing by (1 + rate) ensures accurate extraction.
What is the current GST rate in Singapore?
Singapore increased its GST rate to 9% on January 1, 2024, following an earlier increase to 8% in 2023. Our calculator reflects this 9% statutory benchmark.
How do CGST and SGST work in India?
For transactions within the same Indian state (intra-state), the total GST rate is divided equally into Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST). For sales between different states (inter-state), Integrated GST (IGST) is charged at the full rate.
Can I use this calculator for custom rates or other countries?
Yes. Select "Custom Rate" from the preset dropdown or adjust the rate input directly to any percentage between 0% and 100% to calculate tax for any jurisdiction.
