How the Australia income tax calculator works
Australian take-home pay depends on your residency status, income tax brackets, the Medicare levy, and superannuation contributions. This calculator estimates income tax, Medicare, net pay, and super amounts using Australian Taxation Office (ATO) rates for the 2024-2025 financial year. All math runs in your browser.
Enter your gross income, residency status, whether super is included in your package, super rate, and Medicare levy preference. Results update instantly with a full tax breakdown and pay converted to weekly, fortnightly, and monthly amounts. For a U.S. federal and state comparison, try the income tax calculator. To model regular salary conversions, use the salary calculator. For BIR TRAIN Law tax and SSS, PhilHealth, and Pag-IBIG deductions in the Philippines, see the Philippines income tax calculator.
2024-2025 Australian resident tax brackets
For Australian tax residents in the 2024-2025 financial year, the ATO applies these progressive income tax brackets on taxable income:
- $0 to $18,200: 0% (tax-free threshold)
- $18,201 to $45,000: 16%
- $45,001 to $135,000: 30%
- $135,001 to $190,000: 37%
- Over $190,000: 45%
Non-residents pay 30% on income up to $135,000 with higher rates above that. Working holiday makers (subclass 417 and 462 visa holders) use a separate 15% rate up to $45,000. The calculator supports all three residency types.
Income tax and Medicare levy formulas
For Australian tax residents, income tax on earnings above $45,000 in the middle bracket follows:
The Medicare levy is 2% of taxable income for most Australian residents who opt in:
Net take-home pay is taxable income minus total tax:
When super is not included in your stated gross, the calculator adds employer super on top at your chosen rate (the default 11.5% reflects the 2024-2025 super guarantee). When super is included in the package, taxable income is backed out from the total. For U.S. payroll tax equivalents, see the FICA tax calculator.
Superannuation handling
If super is not included in your gross figure, employer super is calculated as a percentage on top of your taxable salary. If super is included in a total package figure, the calculator separates the super component before applying tax brackets. The biweekly pay calculator helps convert annual net pay into a fortnightly amount (26 fortnights per year in Australia).
Worked example: $95,000 resident salary
Consider an Australian tax resident earning $95,000 gross per year in the 2024-2025 financial year, with super paid on top at 11.5% and the Medicare levy included:
- Taxable income: $95,000 (super is paid on top, not deducted from gross).
- Income tax: $4,288 plus 30% of ($95,000 minus $45,000) = $4,288 + $15,000 = $19,288.00.
- Medicare levy: $95,000 x 2% = $1,900.00.
- Total tax: $19,288.00 + $1,900.00 = $21,188.00. Effective tax rate: about 22.3%.
- Net take-home pay: $95,000 minus $21,188.00 = $73,812.00 per year ($6,151.00 per month, $2,838.92 per fortnight).
- Employer super (11.5% on top): $10,925.00 additional, not deducted from your take-home pay.
If you receive a performance bonus on top of base salary, the bonus calculator estimates U.S.-style supplemental withholding for comparison. To work backward from a desired net amount to required gross pay, use the gross pay calculator.
